https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/524615-biden-win-would-leave-gop-poised-for-2024-comeback Supporters of President Trump are bitterly disappointed that it looks like he did not prevail on Election Day. Though the ultimate outcome is not yet known, former Vice President Joe Biden leads in several key states and is given heavy odds of winning the Oval Office. Nonetheless, not everything went badly for the GOP; in fact, Republicans scored several significant wins. Most important, they have an excellent chance of retaking the White House in 2024. More on that later. First, it appears the GOP will retain a majority in the U.S. Senate. Victories by Susan Collins in Maine, Joni Ernst in Iowa, Lindsey Graham in South Carolina and other Republican incumbents suggest that Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will remain majority leader. As a result, the GOP will continue to act as gatekeeper, protecting Americans from the progressive Left.

GEOFFREY SKELLEY NOV. 5, 11:48 AM In Georgia, ballots continue to trickle in. Deep-blue Fulton County (where much of Atlanta proper is) just reported another 6,000 or so votes, 76 percent of which went for Biden. This took Trump’s statewide edge from 0.4 points to 0.3 points. Hard to say just how many votes are left to report — we last heard around 60,000 an hour or so ago — but we know Biden needed to win probably 62 percent or more of those to take the narrowest of leads. The new votes from Fulton surpass that mark.

I ALL IT AOC AND THE SQAUD DID BIDEN : Republicans responded by focusing more on the community and stepping up their anti-socialist messaging, often depicting Democrats as radical leftists and socialists, labels that former Vice President Joe Biden and his campaign struggled to shake off.

NATE SILVER NOV. 5, 10:25 AM The state of Georgia has released estimates about where outstanding absentee ballots remain to be counted. There’s good news for Biden here: They’re mostly in blue counties. Below, I’ve listed each county’s partisan lean in 2016 — that is, how much more Democratic or Repbulican it was than the state overall in presidential voting that year. Weighting the counties by how many votes they have outstanding, Clinton won them by an average of 14 points in 2016, a year when she lost Georgia by 5 points statewide. Thus, these counties are 19 points bluer than the state on average. One small bit of caution, though, when you’re perusing results: now and then, it will turn out that a group of votes that one source says is still outstanding have actually been counted already, or vice versa. The data on Georgia here would seem to be relatively clear and explicit, but you should always be careful — gathering information about the outstanding number of votes is always complicated in real time.

2020 ELECTIONS ‘The math is pretty simple’: Trump’s lead shrinks in Pennsylvania So far, 78 percent of mail ballots have broken for Biden and 21 percent have been won by the president By HOLLY OTTERBEIN 11/04/2020 10:09 PM EST PHILADELPHIA — With President Donald Trump leading Joe Biden by 196,000 votes and 12 percent of the estimated vote still uncounted, Pennsylvania Democrats and Republicans spent Wednesday working out the rough math surrounding the as-yet-uncounted mail-in ballots. There were more than 1 million mail ballots left to be counted as of 2:35 p.m., according to Pennsylvania’s Department of State. So far, 78 percent of mail ballots have broken for Biden and 21 percent have been won by Trump. If that pace continues — and it’s a big if — Biden would take the lead. Looking at the amount of mail ballots Biden is winning as well as the places still to be fully counted, some Democratic elected officials and consultants, including Sen. Bob Casey, estimate Biden will carry Pennsylvania by about 100,000 votes in a tight race. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/04/pennsylvania-results-trump-biden-434124.

GEOFFREY SKELLEY NOV. 5, 9:23 AM It looks like another 20,000 or so votes have come in from Philadelphia, and they broke 92 percent for Biden. Along with about 9,000 votes from deep-blue Montgomery County that broke 73 percent for Biden, this cut Trump’s statewide advantage from 2.6 percentage points to 2.3 points. It might seem wild that the Philadelphia tranche of votes could be that Democratic, but look at this way: Philadelphia usually votes around 80 percent (or a little higher) for Democratic presidential candidates. Clinton, for example, won 82 percent of the county’s votes in 2016. Right now, Biden is at about 80 percent in Philadelphia. But we also know that voters who used mail-in ballots were more likely to be Democrats, so you’re talking about the most Democratic votes out of a strongly Democratic-leaning pool of voters.

Philadelphia is now reporting an overall margin of about 360,000 votes for Biden, extending his lead there by about 17,000 votes, compared to yesterday. Along with a batch of Montgomery County votes, about 73 percent of which went to Biden, Trump’s lead in the state is now down to about 140,000 votes.

“The legal posture of the case … cuts against the Supreme Court ruling these ballots invalid,” said New York University law professor Richard Pildes. “That’s because the court had two opportunities to stop voters, but did not, from believing their mailed-in ballots were valid as long as they arrived on or before Nov. 6.”

HELL MY DEARS BRETHREN IN TEXAS – WHATS UP? By Jonathan Tilove @JTiloveTX Posted Nov 3, 2020 at 7:49 PM Updated Nov 4, 2020 at 9:16 AM President Donald Trump defeated Democrat Joe Biden in Texas by 5.8 percentage points — 52.2 to 46.4% — Tuesday, claiming the state’s 38 electoral votes. It was still the best performance by a Democratic presidential candidate since 1996, when President Bill Clinton lost to Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole by 5 points. It was a third closer than four years ago, when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points and far better than 2012 when Mitt Romney ran 16 points ahead of President Barack Obama in Texas, and 2008, when John McCain carried Texas over Obama by a 12-point margin.

President Donald Trump defeated Democrat Joe Biden in Texas by 5.8 percentage points — 52.2 to 46.4% — Tuesday, claiming the state’s 38 electoral votes.

But, those numbers aside, Texas Democrats had little to celebrate Wednesday, having been unable to build on their 2018 successes. Two years ago, Beto O’Rourke came within 2.6 points of defeating U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Texas Democrats picked up two congressional seats and flipped a dozen state House seats.

On Tuesday, Texas Democrats, despite clear targets and massive spending, failed to pick up any new seats in Congress or to budge the balance of power in the state House, where the party had hoped to make a play to control the speaker’s gavel and have a hand in the next round of redistricting that will carve state and federal districts for the next decade.

But most bitterly, they failed to meet the expectations they had set and relentlessly stoked, that Texas was ripe and ready to emerge as the nation’s “biggest battleground state,” one that might even prove decisive in delivering the presidency to Biden and completely alter the American electoral map for a generation or more.

“So much for all that talk about Texas turning blue,” said Trump campaign spokeswoman Samantha Cotten.

“Republicans showed there was no slack in their rope,” University of Houston political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus said. “They met the challenge of a rising Democratic Party and changing electorate to keep the state red.”

“The state’s urban core keeps getting more Democratic but not enough suburban swing or drop in Republican support in rural areas to make Texas competitive this cycle,” Rottinghaus said. “Simply put, Republicans rule rural Texas. Urban Texas is booming but not quite enough to offset Republican support in rural Texas.”

“Trump won the state less by being Trump and more because of a strong Republican brand upheld by Republicans down ballot and a powerful ground game in Texas,” he said. “Dozens of down ballot Republicans ran stronger than the president.”

‘The revolution won’t happen overnight’

The disappointing outcome in Texas mirrored the letdown among Democrats nationally that voters had not decisively rejected the Trump presidency, or, it would appear, elected enough Democrats to retake the U.S Senate.

But, Biden might well in the next few days achieve the 270 electoral votes needed to defeat Trump, and Ed Espinoza, executive director of Progress Texas, which works on messaging for progressive politics, said it is important for Texas Democrats to take what happened in Texas in stride and in context.

“Biden won 5.2 million votes. That is impressive,” Espinoza said. “While we didn’t pick up any seats, the fact that we were able to have sustainable progress, that’s big for Democrats in Texas. You had two cycles of wins, and the third cycle you held your ground, and no, it’s not what we wanted, but we do have a resilient and sustainable movement right now.”

“When you look at the big picture, that is a purple state that’s headed in the right direction,” Espinoza said. “One of the things I told my staff this morning is that the revolution won’t happen overnight. It will happen over time.”

Neither the Biden nor Trump campaigns devoted much in the way of time and resources to Texas.

More votes for both sides

And even as Biden received 1.3 million more votes than Clinton did in 2016 in Texas, Trump won 1.1 million more votes in the state in his second run.

And U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, won 5.9 million votes, more than Trump’s 5.8 million, in defeating MJ Hegar by a more comfortable 9.9 percentage points.

These results undermine a central Democratic conceit.

“Democrats have long been known to say that Texas is not a Republican state, it’s a nonvoting state,” said Josh Blank, research director at the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas. “It turns out that a large number of those nonvoters were also Republicans.”

“It’s always, ‘If just more people would vote, we would win,’” Dave Carney, Gov. Greg Abbott’s top political adviser, told Texas reporters in a conference call Wednesday morning, mocking the Texas Democratic mantra. Even with the larger turnout, the outcome was much the same, he said.

Big cities, small towns

Blank said that if you look at the big six counties — Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Travis, Bexar and El Paso — Biden improved on O’Rourke’s advantage by about 100,000 votes, from an 895,000-vote margin to a 997,000-vote margin.

But, Blank said, “what you saw this year was Republicans not being caught flat-footed, like they were in 2018.”

Espinoza estimates that Trump picked up an additional 400,000 votes from small-town and rural Texas, going from 1.9 million in 2016 to 2.3 million votes in that vast expanse of Texas where Democrats have simply not been competitive.

But Blank said Republicans effectively courted voters all across the state — rural, suburban and urban.

Latino vote

Especially nettlesome for Democrats were Trump’s gains among Hispanic voters, most apparent in the 23rd Congressional District, where Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones lost an open, majority Hispanic district, and in voting in the heavily Hispanic counties along the Mexican border that Biden mostly won but not by the massive margins that Democrats would have needed to take the state.

According to analysis by the Texas Politics Project, the Republicans’ share of the vote in the Rio Grande Valley went from 29.6% for Romney in the 2012 presidential election, to 28.9% for Trump in 2016, to 32.3% for Cruz in 2018 to 42% for Trump this year.

So, for example, while Biden was defeating Trump by 14 points in Cameron County, Hillary Clinton defeated Trump there in 2016, by 32 points. In Hidalgo County, Biden won by 17 points, and Clinton by 40 points. And in Starr County, Biden won by 5 points, and Clinton by more than 60 points.

NATHANIEL RAKICH NOV. 5, 7:18 AM Good morning, early birds! Overnight, both Georgia and Arizona tightened some but are still led by Trump and Biden, respectively. While we aren’t expecting to get our next update from Maricopa County in Arizona until 9 p.m. tonight, Georgia is expected to finish counting its remaining 25,000 ballots today. Elsewhere, Nevada will announce more results starting at noon Eastern, and we continue to get results at a steady pace in Pennsylvania — which may be Biden’s best chance to end this race.

https://www.latimes.com/politics/liveblog/election-2020-live-updates-trump-biden-presidential-race-wednesday UPDATED NOV. 5, 2020 | 3:20 AM Facebook Twitter Show more sharing options President Trump’s lead over Joe Biden in Georgia and Pennsylvania is narrowing, and Biden has won Michigan and Wisconsin, opening a path for the former vice president to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House. Democrats’ hopes of taking the Senate faded as GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins won reelection and Democratic challengers fell short in other key races. Democrat and former astronaut Mark Kelly won his Senate race in Arizona. Our reporters are bringing dispatches from more than a dozen cities in battleground states. Follow our live coverage.

Joe Biden has significantly narrowed his gap with President Trump in the traditionally conservative state of Georgia, where the margin between them dropped to about .38 of a percentage point early Thursday.

As of about 6 a.m., Biden trailed Trump by fewer than 19,000 votes out of about 4.84 million counted. More ballots are still to be tabulated, many of them from Democratic-leaning areas around Atlanta.

If either of Biden’s currently slim leads in Arizona and Nevada holds, then a win in Georgia would clinch for Biden the 270 electoral college votes a candidate needs to capture the White House.

Victory for Biden in Georgia would also represent the first time a Democratic presidential nominee has taken the state in 40 years, since a decisive win by native son Jimmy Carter, who nonetheless lost the presidency to Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Protests erupt in Portland and Seattle over Trump campaign court challenges

Hundreds of protesters demonstrated Wednesday in Seattle and Portland, Ore., against President Trump’s court challenges to stop the vote count in battleground states.

The unrest in Portland prompted the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office to declared a riot about 7 p.m. after protesters were seen smashing windows of businesses. Gov. Kate Brown activated the use of the state National Guard to help local law enforcement manage the unrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

Brown said previously she would keep state troopers, sheriff’s deputies and police officers under a unified command into Friday in Portland to handle protests amid the uncertainty over the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.

The Oregon National Guard had been on standby. Brown’s order places law enforcement agencies under the joint command of the Oregon State Police and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department, which allows those agencies to use tear gas if necessary to quell unrest. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who is also police commissioner, banned the use of tear gas by Portland police earlier this fall after concerns about an overly aggressive response to near-nightly protests.

Biden’s lead shrinks as Arizona vote count proceeds

PHOENIX — Joe Biden continued to lose ground to President Trump in Arizona early Thursday, with an overnight update of vote counts in heavily populated Maricopa County shaving Biden’s lead statewide to 50.5% compared with Trump’s 48.1%.

Tensions are running high in Arizona as both Biden and Trump close in on the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency.

A crowd that fluctuated in size from a few dozen people to more than 100 demonstrated Wednesday evening at the state Capitol in Phoenix and at the Maricopa County elections center where the votes were being tabulated. They demanded that all the state’s votes be counted before a winner is declared, and many lashed out at Fox News and the Associated Press for calling the state for Biden on election night Tuesday despite hundreds of thousands of votes still uncounted.

Several demonstrators were armed, according to news accounts from the scene posted to social media. The crowd started to disperse by late evening.

Officials at the elections department tweeted reassurances to the public late Wednesday, saying that they were committed to tabulating all of the outstanding ballots and expressing gratitude to sheriff’s deputies for helping to protect the building as protesters gathered outside.

The tweet thanked the sheriff’s department “for doing their job, so we can do ours.”

The county’s Democratic recorder, Adrian Fontes, was the target of some of the Trump supporters’ chants Wednesday night because of his role in supervising the vote count. Stephen Richer, the Republican who’s behind in his race against Fontes, urged protesters to let the process unfold.

“Let them count. Please,” Richer tweeted as the crowd of demonstrators grew outside the recorder’s office.

Later, he tweeted that it was in everyone’s interest, including Trump’s, that the ballots “be counted accurately without distraction.”

With passion and fervor, Chinese immigrant roots for Trump

The channel flipping, glances at social media and the onslaught of messages from the Chinese multimedia platform WeChat seemed endless for Arcadia resident Fenglan “Juli” Liu, who had intently been following the presidential and local elections since about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

There is no equivocation from the San Gabriel Valley-based immigrant lawyer: America is in peril if Joe Biden is elected president.

“Only Trump will make this country safer,” said Liu, who is leading a recall petition effort against California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “The Democrats believe in open borders and letting anyone in unchecked. If Biden wins I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

It was with this fervor that Liu, who says she’s in her early 50s, stayed up until midnight watching cable news. When Trump won Florida, which pollsters felt was pivotal to his reelection campaign, she delighted in seeing the president overcome “the people who hate him.”

But she was let down on the local front when she channel-surfed to KTLA and saw that Assemblyman Ed Chau (D-Arcadia) was reelected to his 49th District seat with 68% of the vote.

“Ed Chau always votes for taxes and never helps landlords or small-business owners,” she said.

Liu, who emigrated from the autonomous Chinese region of Ningxia 20 years ago, made sure family and friends were kept abreast of local issues. They reciprocated throughout the night with information on state propositions and measures.

Though she was temporarily down, Liu received a boost late in the evening when Ohio was called for Trump.

“He loves this country so much, much more than Biden,” she said.

While some saw Trump’s victory speech on Tuesday evening as premature or uncalled for, Liu backed the president and cheered on the declaration from her living room. She particularly agreed with his dire warning about finding 4 a.m. ballots.

Liu said she worked as a poll observer in Las Vegas from Oct. 24 until Saturday and saw irregularities. “There was illegal stuff going on,” she said. “I wasn’t allowed to see a lot because when I tried to observe, the Democrats kept saying ‘COVID-19, COVID-19,’ but it wasn’t right.”

On Wednesday morning, Liu was hopeful with Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia all within grasp for the president. She spent most of her morning working and took only occasional glances at her phone. As the morning transitioned into the afternoon, the mood grew more somber. CNN called Michigan and Wisconsin for Biden by 3 p.m. and Nevada was also tilting for the former vice president, who was on the cusp of victory. Other stations said Arizona would soon fall to Biden.

“It’s a very sad time,” Liu said at 3:15 p.m. “This can only happen because of cheating. The president said that would happen, and it’s happening in the greatest country in the world.”
