S is a statistical programming language developed primarily by John Chambers and (in earlier versions) Rick Becker and Allan Wilks of Bell Laboratories. The aim of the language, as expressed by John Chambers, is “to turn ideas into software, quickly and faithfully”.[1]
The modern implementation of S is R, a part of the GNU free software project. S-PLUS, a commercial product, was formerly sold by TIBCO Software.[citation needed]

History
“Old S”
S is one of several statistical computing languages that were designed at Bell Laboratories, and first took form between 1975–1976.[2] Up to that time, much of the statistical computing was done by directly calling Fortran subroutines; however, S was designed to offer an alternate and more interactive approach. Early design decisions that hold even today include interactive graphics devices (printers and character terminals at the time), and providing easily accessible documentation for the functions.
The first working version of S was built in 1976, and operated on the GCOS operating system. At this time, S was unnamed, and suggestions included Interactive SCS (ISCS), Statistical Computing System, and Statistical Analysis System (which was already taken: see SAS System). The name ‘S’ (used with single quotation marks until 1979) was chosen, as it is the common letter used in statistical computing, and is consistent with other programming languages designed from the same institution at the time (namely the C programming language).
When UNIX/32V was ported to the (then new) 32-bit DEC VAX, computing on the Unix platform became feasible for S. In late 1979, S was ported from GCOS to UNIX, which would become the new primary platform.
In 1980 the first version of S was distributed outside Bell Laboratories and in 1981 source versions were made available.[2] In 1984 two books were published by the research team at Bell Laboratories: S: An Interactive Environment for Data Analysis and Graphics[3] (1984 Brown Book) and Extending the S System.[4] Also, in 1984 the source code for S became licensed through AT&T Software Sales for education and commercial purposes.
“New S”
By 1988, many changes were made to S and the syntax of the language. The New S Language[5] (1988 Blue Book) was published to introduce the new features, such as the transition from macros to functions and how functions can be passed to other functions (such as apply). Many other changes to the S language were to extend the concept of “objects”, and to make the syntax more consistent (and strict). However, many users found the transition to New S difficult, since their macros needed to be rewritten. Many other changes to S took hold, such as the use of X11 and PostScript graphics devices, rewriting many internal functions from Fortran to C, and the use of double precision (only) arithmetic. The New S language is very similar to that used in modern versions of S-PLUS and R.
In 1991, Statistical Models in S[6] (1991 White Book) was published, which introduced the use of formula-notation[7] (which use the ‘~’ operator), data frame objects, and modifications to the use of object methods and classes.

The latest version of the S standard is S4, released in 1998.[8] It provides advanced object-oriented features. S4 classes differ markedly from S3 classes.[how?]

Dehradun (/ˌdɛərəˈduːn/), also spelled Dera Doon,[5][6] is the interim capital of Uttarakhand, a state in India. Located in the Garhwal region, it lies 236 kilometres (147 mi) north of India’s capital New Delhi and 168 kilometres (104 mi) from Chandigarh. It is one of the “Counter Magnets” of the National Capital Region (NCR) being developed as an alternative centre of growth to help ease the migration and population explosion in the Delhi metropolitan area and to establish a smart city at Dehradun.[7] During the days of British Raj, the official name of the town was Dehra.[8]
Dehradun is located in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between the river Ganges on the east and the river Yamuna on the west. The city is famous for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region. It is well connected and in proximity to Himalayan tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, and Auli and the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Chota Char Dham.
Dehradun Municipal Corporation is locally known as Nagar Nigam Dehradun. Other urban entities involved in civic services and city governance and management include Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), Special Area Development Authority (SADA), Jal Sansthan, and Jal Nigam among others. Dehradun is also known for its Basmati rice and bakery products.
Dehradun’s Afghan connection dated back to the First Anglo-Afghan War, after which the Afghan Emir Dost Mohammad Khan (Emir of Afghanistan) was exiled by the British to Dehra Dun.[14] He stayed in Mussoorie for over 6 years. The Balahissar ward under the Mussoorie municipality has been named after the palace of Dost Mohammad. The famous Dehradooni Basmati was brought along by him from Kunar Province in Afghanistan and it continues to be counted as a delicacy of the valley.[14][15] Forty years later, after the Second Anglo-Afghan War, his grandson, Mohammad Yaqub Khan, was sent to exile to India in 1879. Just like his grandfather, he choose Doon valley as his abode. Yakoob became the first Afghan to formally settle in Dehradun. The present Mangla Devi Inter College, was once the Kabul Palace where Yakoob spent a few years of his life. The extended family and servants of the King were also relocated to Dehradun[16]
The Afghan royal family maintained a presence in Dehra Dun. It was the birthplace of the second to last King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Nadir Shah.Two quaint palaces — the Kabul Place in Dehradun and Balahissar Palace in Mussoorie — stand testimony to this connection with Afghanistan. They were built by these Afghan rulers in exile in India in the early part of the 20th Century and are palaces are a miniature replica of the palatial structures owned by the kings in Afghanistan. The Balahissar Palace has now been turned into Mussoorie’s Wynberg Allen School. Doon-based heritage enthusiast Ghanshyam told the Times of India, “The police station at Karanpur used to be the royal guard room of Yakoob way back in 1879. The electrical office located at the Survey Chowk was the royal servant quarters.”[14]
Today the descendants of the former royalty, Yakub Khan and his grandson Sardar Azim Khan’s family have integrated with the mainstream of Dehra Dun life.[17] The Doon connection was revived when Zahir Shah, the last king of Afghanistan, while undergoing treatment in New Delhi during the last years of his life expressed a desire to meet his Doon cousins but the meeting could not take place as the family members were away.[17]Ashraf Ghani, the current President of Afghanistan has mentioned that his grandmother grew up in Dehra Dun. “I speak of Tagore because I was raised on Tagore by my grandmother who lived in Dehradun…,” Dr Ghani said while talking about India’s vision and the remarkable transformation.[18] Dehra Dun is also being selected to be the second “home” ground of the Afghan cricket team.[19]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving for Bhutan in August
NEW DELHI:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook seven foreign trips and visited nine countries between August and November this year, the External Affairs Ministry told Parliament on Wednesday.
Replying to a written question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan gave out details of the foreign tours of the president, vice president, prime minister, external affairs minister and himself.
PM Modi undertook seven foreign trips from August till November and visited nine countries, according to the data presented by Mr Muraleedharan.
The prime minister visited Bhutan, France, the UAE, Bahrain, Russia, the US, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Brazil in the said period, according to the data.
Replying to another written question, Mr Muraleedharan said a US-based not-for-profit organisation Texas India Forum, Inc. organised an event titled “Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures” in Houston on September 22.
The prime minister, as part of his US visit in September, took part in the event at the invitation of the organisers and addressed a gathering of members of the Indian-American community and many of their elected representatives, the minister said.
“Government of India did not enter into any partnership with the Texas India Forum nor did it provide funding for this event,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind undertook three foreign trips and visited seven countries from August to November, while Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu undertook an equal number of foreign trips and visited six countries.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar undertook 13 trips to 16 countries and Mr Muraleedharan undertook 10 trips to 16 countries in the said period, according to the data presented by the minister.
Fourteen dignitaries, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping, visited India from August to November, the data showed.
