‘Notebook’ box office collection Day 1: The Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan starrer off to a slow start

‘Notebook’, that marks the film debuts of Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan was off to a rather poor start at the box office. The film earned about Rs 70 lakh on its opening day at the ticket window.

Amidst much hype and favourable reviews, the film backed and produced  by Salman Khan performed poorly

Junglee collected 3.25- 3.50 crore nett on day one and did reasonable business in some places but generally the collections were low.  Bihar was best with 20 lakhs nett business and this circuit still remains to loyal to animal films.

Films with animals in the past which may not have been huge hits across India always did big business here like Maa (1976), Main Aur Mera Haathi (1981)and Doodh Ka Karz (1990) and this might not be huge in Bihar like those films but is still far better than other circuits. It has collected more than Uri – The Surgical Strike on day one in Bihar.

The better collections are from mass circuits so huge growth maybe difficult for the film. The other release Notebook has fared poorly with collections of 60-70 lakhs nett on day one. It is three times less than Junglee which itself is not that good.

This film will find it tough going with such low collections. The collections are much lower than the last Salman Khan Production . Loveyatri released in October last year did business of 2.11 crore nett on day one – and even Loveyatri produced by Salman Khan, which had his brotehr in law as the star, flopped at the box office, it had a budeget of 27 crores { 1 crore = 10 million Indian Rupees} – and had revenue of 18 crores…

here is the story of the earlier production of Khan Salman

The story starts with Sushrut’s aka Susu’s (Aayush Sharmateacher, who refunds his tuition fee to his parents as he thinks Sushrut is completely unambitious. His father is always tired of asking him to plan his future but he is stuck with his dream of opening a Garba academy.

The story then shifts to London where Michelle (Warina Hussain) is a very bright college student. Her father, Sameer/Sam (Ronit Roy) owns a chain of laundrythere. Their relatives fool them by faking Natthu’s (Manoj Joshiheart attack as they want them to come to Baroda. Terrified, they reach India and find out the truth. On everybody’s insistence, they plan to stay there for 9 days until the festival of Navaratri.

At Garba, Sushrut sees and falls in love with Michelle at first sight. His best friends dig out her information from her relative Khusboo.

With his Garba singer and clothing store owner uncle Rasik’s (Ram Kapoor) advice he plans to charm Michelle. As per plan while performing Garba, Susu stays around Michelle and she accidentally hits dandiya on his eye. He fakes an injury. She calls him to apologize. Sushrut acts as if he was deeply injured.

He spends time with Michelle and they become good friends. Khushboo sees them together and says to Susu that she will reveal the truth to Michelle. Susu is terrified and reveals the truth himself to Michelle. Michelle says she already understood that the injury was fake as he goofed up and bandaged the incorrect side of his forehead. Also, he kept the bandage just for a day then forgot to put it.

Michelle takes him to her mother’s NGO, which provided women employment. It had shut down after her death when Michelle was 10 years old. Earlier, when Michelle was 4 years old, Sam went to London to earn money to support her mother’s dreams but could not come back due to his business and immigration issues. Her mother died waiting for her dad. Michelle reveals her dream of reopening the NGO. She also reveals her actual name Manisha which was changed by Sam after she moved to London post her mom’s death. Sushrut decides he will call her by the name Manisha.

Soon, Sam gets to know about Michelle and Sushrut from Khushboo. He calls Sushrut on a Ferris wheel and says that there is a difference between them, similar to the top and bottom of the wheel. He asks him to stay away from Michelle as there is a huge difference between their status and class. He also lies, that she is in a relationship with Chris. Michelle receives an email that she got admission to London’s top business school. She is very happy and throws a pizza party for Sushrut and his friends. Out of happiness, she informs the pay package of the college (after graduating) is 85000 pounds (75 lakhs INR). Sushrut assumes she is showing off and also cheating on him with Chris. He insults her badly at the restaurant. She does not respond and goes away from the restaurant.

Later Sushrut’s friends’ inform to Rasik about the incident. On Rasik’s insistence, Sushrut realizes his mistake and wants to apologize. When Michelle is going back to London, Sushrut and his friends try to reach the Ahmadabad airport from Baroda to stop her but their activa meets an accident on the way and they are unable to reach.

10 months pass by. Sushrut still remembers Michelle and tries for ways to go to London. Finally, he gets an opportunity when Rasik’s Garba troop gets a contract to perform in London. He pleases the officer by doing garba in his visa interview and gets the visa and reaches London. While searching for Michelle, he remembers and goes to ‘Shelter Home’ where Michelle volunteers every Sunday. He meets her and apologizes. Michelle shares her number and promises to meet him.

The next day he hangs out with Michelle and her friends and meets Chris, and assumes him to be her boyfriend. He gets jealous and feels bad when Michelle speaks to Chris.

Heart broken he goes to a pub where Rasik motivates him by telling him Indians learn about love from movies. He tells him about Yash ChopraSooraj BarjatyaAamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak), Shahrukh Khan (Veer-Zaara), Salman Khan(Tere Naam) and asks to declare his love to Michelle. The next day he sees London with Michelle and her friends and is spotted by Sam. Then on the Tower Bridge (London Bridge), Sushrut expresses his love and speaks to her about Chris assuming him to be her boyfriend.

He calls his friends and comes to know that Negative and Kushboo have become a couple. They also motivate him to speak to Michelle again as Michelle had never told him about Chris directly.

Sam meets Sushrut again and reminds about the status gap between them by showing him the Ferris wheel London Eye. Shushrut realizes that Sam had brainwashed him about Chris and confronts him. In order to frame Sushrut, Sam breaks his own car’s window and puts Sushrut’s hand on his collar. Police come and arrests Sushrut. Gujrati Police officers Jignesh (Sohail Khan) and Bhavesh (Arbaaz khan) sets him free after hearing his story while everybody is searching for Sushrut.

Michelle meets Rasik and finally gets to know, that Sam lied to Sushrut about Chris. She confronts Sam about it and about her love and NGO dreams. She tells Sam that he has always imposed his choices on her but she wants to be with Sushrut She runs down where Shushrut is waiting with Rasik and Garba party. She informs Sushrut that Chris is gay and not her boyfriend. Sam finally had to agree for their marriage when Jignesh and Bhavesh threatened him that they have the CCTV recording of him breaking the car windows and they will arrest him if he does not agree for the marriage.

At the end, they return to India and Michelle fulfills her dream to reopen her mother’s NGO and Sushrut opens his own Garba academy. The last statement states they lived happily ever after.

Armed with US-made bombs and British-made fighter jets, Saudi Arabia and its allies have been waging a ruinous war on Yemen for the last four years.

Since they intervened in the country’s civil war on March 26, 2015, more than 19,000 raids have been carried out in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country.

When the aerial campaign commenced, expectations were high that the coalition assembled by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman would crush the alliance of Houthi rebels and army forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh within a matter of weeks.

But after nearly four years of fighting, and an estimated 60,000 deaths, the coalition has failed to pave the way for the recapture of the capital, Sanaa, and most urban centres.

Despite assurances by the coalition that all precautionary measures would be taken to avoid civilian casualties, a sizable number of coalition attacks have targeted civilian areas.

According to data collected by the Yemen Data Project, nearly two-thirds of the coalition’s air raids have struck non-military and unknown targets.

Airports, ports, bridges and roads have all been repeatedly attacked.

So, too, have farms, schools, oil and gas facilities, factories and private businesses.

According to rights groups, the coalition has not accidentally attacked civilian infrastructure – it has been doing it deliberately.

Between June and September, when the coalition launched a new offensive on the port city of Hodeidah, fatalities increased by a staggering 164 percent.

Because of these incessant attacks, Yemen’s civilian, economic and medical infrastructures have been pushed to the brink of collapse. Today, Yemen is the site of a horrific civil war, and the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

According to the United Nations, up to 20 million Yemenis, roughly two-thirds of the country’s population, are food insecure.

Thousands of people are starving to death and dying from preventable diseases, while an average of eight civilians die from bombs and bullets every day.

In this interactive, based on data collected by the Yemen Data Project, an air raid refers to a single incident which could comprise multiple attacks.

Because it was not possible to generate an average number as these vary greatly, from one attack up to several dozen, so-called "double taps" have been counted as one air raid, not two.

Four years after the launch of the Saudi-led campaign, the bulk of Yemen’s northern highlands, as well as the capital city of Sanaa, remain under the control of Houthi rebels.

While Hodeidah, home to Yemen’s largest port and the main gateway for food, fuel and humanitarian aid entering the country, has seen a lull in fighting since December after the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels, the violence has continued unabated elsewhere.

In Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, local militias backed by the United Arab Emirates have turned on each other since they expelled Houthi fighters from large sections of the city.

While Yemeni forces backed by the coalition have made notable gains in some areas bordering the kingdom, as well as in Nihm District in the Sanaa Governorate, some 50km east of the capital, more than 15 million Yemenis are still estimated to live under Houthi control.

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his prime minister, Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, govern from the port city of Aden, but their government has failed to convene one session of parliament since the war erupted.

They have also failed to contend with a separatist movement in the south that has intensified its calls for an uprising against the internationally-recognised government.

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) has repeatedly undermined the government as it seeks to revive the former South Yemen republic which merged with the north in 1990.

At the same time, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has continued to launch deadly attacks but appears to have shifted its priorities.

The armed group has lost large areas of territory it once controlled to UAE-backed militias, however it still operates training camps in some areas of the south and continues to take credit for attacks on Houthi-linked targets.

In July, one of al-Qaeda’s senior leaders, Khaled Baterfi, said his group had reduced attacks against President Hadi and UAE-backed forces because assailing them would benefit the Houthis.

Also in the south, the Yemeni chapter of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) has exploited the security vacuum and claimed responsibility for several attacks against al-Qaeda, Houthi fighters and pro-government troops.

Air raids in 2015

At the request of Yemen’s internationally recognised Yemeni government, Saudi Arabia formed a military coalition of several Arab nations to assist Yemen’s armed forces in fighting the Houthi rebels.

Although the Saudi-led coalition only intervened in Yemen at the end of March, they carried out more air raids in 2015 than any other year.

The United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, among several other nations, lent their support to the coalition in the form of weapons, intelligence and training.
