Ulanu is a party for people who worked hard to succeed and is not “privileged” people, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said at his party’s campaign launch in Ashkelon on Wednesday night.

Kahlon repeatedly derided “privileged people” and “stars” in his speech, saying that he prefers hard work and experience.

He said he is seeking partners that “look people in the eye, understand them and how hard it is to live while making minimum wage and how hard it is to be unemployed.”

“That’s what I’m looking for,” he said, adding an apparent dig at Israel Resilience leader Benny Gantz, “not privileged people who say ‘I was there, so now I should be prime minister.’”

Kahlon recounted his childhood in an underprivileged family of nine, where he lived in a two-room house.

“There were no shortcuts for me,” he said. “Do the privileged people care how much you pay for cell phone service? Were they interested in housing prices? The privileged people should know it doesn’t matter what family they’re born into. They can get jobs by taking shortcuts, but they’ll fail.”

“We know what happens with ministers who show up without experience,” Kahlon added.

That is why he will keep his current roster of MKs, who have garnered four years of experience, calling them “a winning team.”

Several other lawmakers from his party will not be running with Kulanu in the next Knesset including Yoav Gallant, who moved to Likud, as well as Michael Oren, Rachel Azaria and Eli Alalouf, who are not candidates for the next Knesset.

Kahlon vowed to deal with issues pertaining to voters’ everyday lives.

“This election is about you, every one of you and your families, your kids’ futures, what our society is like, and just and equal opportunities. We need social justice at this time,” he said.

The Finance Minister talked about increasing the medicine basket’s budget and his flagship subsidized housing lottery. He also said that 23,500 Israeli children came out of poverty during his tenure, adding: “Just for that, this whole journey was worth it.”

As for Kulanu’s poor showing in the polls, getting four seats in surveys taken by all three broadcast channels on Wednesday, Kahlon said that these “polls are only good for making pollsters money,” and claimed that his party was underestimated in 2015 as well.

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to India on February 11 on a day-long visit during which he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his second visit to New Delhi in just over a year.

Netanyahu visited India in January 2018 while Prime Minister Modi travelled to Tel Aviv in 2017, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to tour the Jewish state.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu will be in India only for a day on February 11 and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been confirmed. Other details are being worked out," informed sources here said.

Both the leaders spoke over the phone earlier this month when Israel’s National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbath visited New Delhi. Ben-Shabbat also met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

The Israeli prime minister is said to have expressed his desire to visit India again to which Modi is said to have consented, sources said.

His visit comes just ahead of the Knesset (parliament) elections on April 9.

Netanyahu, who hopes for a fourth straight electoral victory, has taken up many trips abroad recently to strengthen Israel’s standing in the international community, something that his supporters have been using to project him as the only leader who can drum up support for Israel.

Israel has recently seen major diplomatic breakthroughs with Netanyahu visiting Oman, a country that doesn’t have diplomatic ties with Israel, and Chad, an overwhelming Muslim country, restarting diplomatic engagement with the Jewish state.

The Israeli leader seems to be trying to convince his people that his country is not isolated in the global community and many more nations would be working with Tel Aviv, irrespective of a breakthrough on the deadlocked peace process with Palestinians.

Political rivals wasted no time in attacking neophyte politician Benny Gantz Tuesday, as he launched his political campaign and bid to lead the country.

Right-wing lawmakers charged that Gantz’s remarks in Tel Aviv showed he is a leftist, while those on the left of Israeli politics were disappointed that the former army chief left himself room to join Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a future government.

Netanyahu responded with a terse Twitter post in which he scorned Gantz for trying to present himself as centrist.

“Another Lapid speech,” Netanyahu wrote referring Yair Lapid, the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party.

“Anyone who says he isn’t left or right — is left,” the prime minister declared.

Gantz is seen as the strongest challenger to Netanyahu in years, with surveys showing many Israelis seeing him as a suitable prime minister, and polls positioning him as a possible leader of a center-left bloc. Gantz broke his political silence at his campaign launch event held at the Tel Aviv Exhibition Grounds.

Meanwhile, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, a member of the Netanyahu’s Likud party, responded to Gantz with a tweet, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

“You would expect from someone who claims to be running for leadership of the country to present a path, values, and to not be satisfied with flattering posters and poetic slogans,” he wrote.

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, who leads the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, slammed Gantz’s vow to enable public transport on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, and his support of civil marriage and of the 2015 Western Wall compromise, which would ensure all streams of Judaism have formal prayer rights at one of the holiest places.

“After months of silence the news for the people of Israel is civil marriages and a reform section at the Western Wall?” Deri tweeted, adding “Public transport on Shabbat? No, Benny. That is not the way to unite the people, rather to divide it. Do not remove the delicate tissue that connects us as a people. Do not touch the Jewish tradition.”

Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who co-leads the recently formed New Right party, called the former IDF chief a danger to the country’s security.

“He talks well, but is weak in action,” Bennett said. “Gantz is a clear leftist in his views. It is dangerous to give him the defense portfolio or responsibility for the security of Israel.”

Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis (Likud) accused Gantz of not revealing his real opinions.

“We heard a lot of slogans but we didn’t hear positions,” Akunis said, according to the Walla website. “To blur and hide positions is not leadership and not statesmanship. It is completely clear that when you have leftist views you need to hide them from the public, in order to gather votes.”

Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev echoed Akunis.

“Gantz is the new left, which apparently doesn’t distinguish between a monarchy and democracy,” she said, referring to comments by Gantz in which he suggested the government is behaving like a monarchy. “Worst of all, he didn’t give his opinion on important political issues. He stayed silent; all he wants is to bring down the right and Netanyahu.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, also of Likud, said “Benny Gantz’s media advisers did not pass up on a single empty slogan or worn-out cliche.”

“Benny Gantz is the new Yair Lapid, left in camouflage,” she said, adding “the right-wing public is not buying the costume.”

Veteran MK Shelly Yachimovich of the opposition Labor Party lamented that Gantz indicated he would be prepared to sit with Netanyahu in a government as long as the prime minister is not indicted in various corruption cases against him.

“Courage is needed not only on the battlefield but also in politics,” she tweeted. “Gantz said nice things, but he left himself an option to be a minister in the government of someone who is up to the neck in criminal activity and is breaking the rule of law for his own purposes. It is regrettable that new people in politics who are supposed to bring a fresh and clean spirit do not show public courage.”

Tzipi Livni, the head of the opposition Hatnua party, took a more favorable view, congratulating Gantz on the speech and paraphrasing some of his comments, too.

“There is no doubt that the country comes before us and the answer to the question of what kind of Israel we leave behind us — will it be a country with a bad wind as Netanyahu and his partners left it, or a state in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence, with a Jewish majority and with equality.

Gantz’s decision to run on a joint electoral slate with fellow former IDF chief of staff Moshe Ya’alon, who set up the Telem party, also drew mixed reactions, with mostly praise coming from the center-left that has sought to form a bloc with the ex-generals.

Despite being a security hawk opposed to Palestinian statehood, Ya’alon has been welcomed by many on the left for his opposition to Netanyahu.

Leader of the Labor Party Avi Gabbay welcomed the union, saying “alliances are important,” but noted that the new partnership must now choose whether or not to directly oppose Netanyahu in forming the next government.

“Gantz and Ya’alon need to decide if they want to continue to perpetuate the Netanyahu rule or that together we will defeat Netanyahu,” Gabbay said at the Israel National Security Studies conference in Tel Aviv.

MK Yair Lapid said that Gantz and Ya’alon “are good and valuable people and it is good that they are in politics. I wish them luck, just as long as they don’t overdo it.”

However, Lapid clarified that his election plan is to aim for the position of prime minister and that if he wins, he will first approach the Likud party or Labor to form a coalition, Channel 13 TV news reported.

The New Right party, led by Bennett and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, who are longtime critics of Netanyahu and then-IDF chief Gantz’s policy of containment of Hamas in Gaza, issued a biting critique.

In a statement, New Right called the two former IDF chiefs “the architects of the stalemate” with Hamas.

“The last time [Ya’alon] and Gantz worked together it ended with 30 terror tunnels [from Gaza] in the south,” the New Right said.

“Both are good people, but they led the weak stalemate doctrine,” the statement said, adding “it’s a doctrine of ignoring threats instead of taking care of them with determination. The question in this election is, what’s better, Gantz and Ya’alon’s stalemate doctrine, or [New Right chair Naftali] Bennett’s doctrine of decisive victory.”

Former defense minister Avigdor Liberman, whose appointment to the ministry by Netanyahu prompted Ya’alon to resign from the government in 2016, dismissed the union as fleeting.

“What is clear at the moment is that the general’s party is a one-off, a party which was set up in preparation for the elections and will disappear before the next elections,” said Liberman, who leads the Yisrael Beytenu party. “I wish them success, but I admit that I don’t agree with them about anything.”

MK Michal Rozin of the left-wing Meretz party questioned the suitability of a party in which two top figures have such diverse views on key state policies.

“It is becoming clear that ‘there is no right and no left’ if [Ya’alon] who opposes the two-state solution and Gantz, who apparently is seeking peace, join together in the generals party,” she said referring to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Since resigning, Ya’alon has become a strident critic of Netanyahu and said he would not sit in a coalition with him.

Polls have shown Israel Resilience garnering 13-15 seats in the April 9 elections, making it the second or third largest party, while Ya’alon was seen as failing to gain enough votes to enter the 12

OL INTEL – WHATS AI ?

Posted on December 12, 2018 by OLGA SHULMAN LEDNICHENKO AND YONI NETANYAHU BLOG

The five senses traditionally ascribed to humans are

5-senses.jpg?zoom=1.25&w=562

[1] vision,

[2] hearing,

[3] taste,

[4] smell and [5] touch.

[6]

A sixth “sense” could be proprioception, the perception of body position, which is important for balance and agility in movement. It could also include perception of stimuli from within the body, such as pain, hunger, or thirst.

human_body_five_senses.gif?zoom=1.25&resize=562%2C262

You may wonder, what does AI and ROBOTS have to do with 6 human senses. And the answer is : Its all about – simulating or replicating – the above 6 senses in Robots:

512ASezwhiL.jpg?zoom=1.25&fit=500%2C440&ssl=1

how? you may ask

and what are the names of the technologies that augment – aid – or impart the above 6 senses in Robots:

here they are

[1] VISION – this involves, reading text, images, videos – etc – Now, in this aspect, the name of the technology is called Computer Vision – and yes, this field is quite evolved now..

We – at OL INTEL – are yes able to READ – text and Images – Both .. Our use case doesn’t involve videos so, we dont have video – but MANY APPLICATIONS – including My friend Rashid’s Company – has VIDEO VISION as well.

[2] Hearing – This involves – the ear – in human – and receptors and sensors etc – in Robots – example is VOICE RECOGNITION to HEAR stuff – This is also quite developed, ALEXA AND GOOGLE HOME – and My friend’s AI – TRACE. involves Hearing also..

we plan to have hearing as well.. – but at a later stage..

[3] [4] [5] – the taste, smell and touch – is very hard – and so far – we dont have any advancement in these aspects .. Specially in taste.and Smell.. Touch to a certain extent – is there and is used in PHYSCIAL Robotos.. we dont have this in our OL Intel

This is MANUJ NAMAn’S COMPANY ANANTAK – MANUJ IS FROM IIT AND INSEAD

[6] The Sixth sense – balance and coordination is – used in PhySICAL Robotos – and drones are one example of that. We are in SOFTWARE -where this faculty isnt required..

Now,yes, this is a HARD area. Its not easy. Its challenging. To get to the level of all 6 senses – I am not sure it would ever be possible, unless we marry Genomics and AI – and Cloning etc –

now, you may ask, ok – so, where would be the first – use of AI and Robots:?

Here is the answer -> WHEN EVER AND WHERE EVER THE PROCESS OR TASK IS – RULE BASED AND/OR REPETITIVE – ITS RIPE FOR THE ROBOT

and hence ROBOT will arrive : be it in software avatar or in physical form

so,

RULE + REPETITIVE = RIPE 4 ROBOT

robot_v2-1.png?zoom=1.25&resize=562%2C360&ssl=1

{ software robots are called Bots, and physical ones are mostly called robots}

NOW, you may ask, is there a name for this – rule based and repetitive automation or augmentation by bots or robots and the answer is yes.

and the name is RPA – Robotic Process Automation.

but thats the first step.. and the easiest one to do..

so, whats the next phase or the harder level of AI ?

well, the harder part is – when its UNSTRUCTURED – DATA OR PROCESS OR TASK – in other words when its not PURELY RULE BASED AND REPETITIVE

in short, when BRAIN is required – when ANALYSIS is required – ie, when COGNITION is required… Cognition involved – analysis and some JUDGEMENT OR DECISION to be taken by the robot

injecting-ai-into-rpa.jpg?zoom=1.25&w=562&ssl=1

Lets take an example of FORMS:

Its one thing to simply Fill the Forms by collating data from multiple places, Its harder when you have to use your brain and make sense of the data – this is when BRAIN is required: – for instance: in Insurance industry – there is – yes a lot of FORM FILLING – enter this – enter that, Type name, SSN, ADDRESS AND OTHER FIELDS – – very repetitive, mundane and quite boring – and tiring to say the least.

But – after data IS entered – the insurance company or the agent has to DECIDE – whether to GIVE INSURANCE OR NOT AND IF YES, THEN WHAT WOULD OR SHOULD BE THE RIGHT PREMIUMS

robot-image.jpg?zoom=1.25&w=562&ssl=1

and the same is involved in detecting Fraud and instances where in the agent or the back office of the Insurance company has to read the claims – and then – decide on the claims processing etc ..

these steps are a bit more involved – and invoke the use of human or robotic brain – this is why – this piece isnt called ROBOTIC – process automation but and instead its called COGNITIVE AUTOMATION.

do, we at OL INTEL – offer COGNITIVE PROCESS AUTOMATION – ALSO CALLED INTELLIGENT PROCESS AUTOMATION BY US ?

THE ANSWER IS YES

nOW, THE ABOVE EXAMPLE WAS THAT OF INSURANCE – industry

Similarly BANKS – and other industries have the same or similar needs

so, whats CALLED A USE CASE ?

well a use case is a name given to the APPLICATION OF A TECHNOLOGY OR APPLICATION OF: A SET OF TECHNOLOGIES TO A GIVEN – DEFINED – SPECIFIC PROBLEM AND SOLUTION IN AN INDUSTRY .. VERTICAL..

why the use of the word VERTICAL ? – well, Vertical – means WITHIN a GIVEN INDUSTRY – such as BANKING VERSUS MOBILE – VERSUS INSURANCE VERSUS FINANCE – ETC ETC

why use versus ? – well its just a word to DIFFERENTIATE – the tasks or processes involved in an industry – as opposed to AMONG OR BETWEEN INDUSTRIES ..

SO, WHATS HORIZONTAL ? – well horizontal is a term used in contrast to a vertical – because and when – the USE OF A PROCESS, TECHNIQUE OR TECHNOLOGY is – the SAME – THROUGHOUT THE DIFFERENT Industries

FOR EXAMPLE ? – THE READ – the VISION part – is HORIZONTAL – in other words COMPUTER VISION IS REQUIRED AND IS APPLICABLE AND HENCE APPLIED in all industry segments where there is a NEED TO SEE – AND THEN – ACT

for example ? – well for example in BOTH banks and insurance companies – if you want AI – there would be documents – in paper or electronic format – same for Legal by the way

and whenever you have a need to SEE – a document – which could be image – or text or video – the COMPUTER VISION PIECE WILL BE REQUIRED – and hence the term horizontal not vertical.

Horizontal means – ACROSS – the INDUSTRIES

Vertical means – SPECIFIC to an Industry ..

For example in BOTH EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT – and IN INSURANCE – the word DOCUMENT is involved – Yes, of course in the case of Travel and Entertainment – industry – the name of the document is receipts – and the Goal is – REIMBURSEMENT .. { hence the term expense reimbursement, basically expenses incurred by employees on behalf of the business or government that employed the employee”

In the case of Insurance the name of the DOCUMENT IS POLICY DOCUMENTS OR CLAIMS DOCUMENTS and in case of Banks, it would be new accounts and LOAN PROCESSING

another example is AP AND AR – meaning ARAP – meaning Accounts Receivables and Accounts Payable.

Accounts Payable means – someone sent a document – called INVOICE – which has your name and address and some ID number – and an Itemized Bill – with charges – separated by diferent lines – hence called LINE ITEMS – – and that totals to be – the final amount you NEED TO PAY – hence word accounts PAYABLE ..

Accounts Receivable is – the amount you have to or expect to RECEIVE from the customer.

FOR example – and this is a small example

for example – IF YOU BUY A PIZZA from a shop or restaurant – they give you a piece of paper, that tells you

[a] what you bought – which is the pizza

[b] what time you bought the pizza – which is the date and time..

[c] what comprises the pizza – this could be the toppings etc

[d] whats the name of the product – this could be like Pizza Green House..

[e] what is the name of the shop – this is there in words and sometimes in Logos – in form of water mark.

[f] the VAT in some names and Now GST – the tax in India – and then there are other pieces of data, in that small document – which is called RECEIPT .. – if u do personal accounting, then in accounting parlance, lets say the pizza is $ 9.99 – then – ? well, the ACCOUNTS PAYABLE – will have an entry on YOUR books – which would be $9.99 and then the PIZAA shop – will have an entry caleld $9.99 – in accounts receinavle – rather – it would be in some other accounting name filed – named Goods Sold – AND within that -the pizza shop owner, may have different codes – like

if – pizza sold is green house – then the cose is 1 and if its maragarita pizza then code is 0 – whateevr they want to code it as

this coding and stuff is – i think – { as far as ai can remember from financial accounting class, when 2004 i left which is when olga met ajay movies was played ” } there are some words called

Journal Entry, General Ledger and CHART OF ACCOUNTS etc

NOW, when its – YOU BUYING A PIZZA ON A BUSINESS TRIP – then its called – EXPENSE RECEIPT – AND THE GOAL is REIMBRUSEMENT

in that case – the above A THROUGH F – information will be EXTRACTED – ie Chiseled out from the DOCUMENT – which we will call RECEIPT – not ACCOUNTS PAYABLE or Invoice..

and thats the D – the DIS-ASSEMBLY part – in our DIA – this D is possible only when someone – can READ – all that [a] through [f] data mentioned above – and piece it one by one in a line item – also called itemized fashion or form.. this READING the RECEIPT employs COMPUTER VISION

now, when the company – your employer – receives this receipt – { along side gazillions of other receipts from you and other employees} it has to do at least the following

[1] ACCEPT this data – generated or rather sent by the Robot –

[2] AUDIT the data sent – audit is done to ensure that the money spent was within the company policy or norms – Imagine – getting a breakfast receipt for $200 – when your company has a limit of less than $25 for break fast – AND yes, of course – there could be – and sometimes are – fraudulent or bogus expenses

[3] Advise – Its easy in case of pizza and dollar amounts being small or within the company policy or norms – but – some companies ask their Finance departments to find WAYS to CONTROL – as in REDUCE costs – incurred – ..

W.png?zoom=1.25&w=562&ssl=1

For example – a company may be able to – analyze all the expenses – and then realize that – they may be better off negotiating a corporate discount – from their vendors – { vendors is a term used for anyone who supplies/provides goods or services to a business

– for example: hotels, airlines, rental cars etc – are vendors – who often get calls or emails from companies asking for Volume Discounts [ read lower prices, because we buy in volumes – ie buy in tons and kilos from you –  Volume is basically a business term for LOTS OF STUFF – ALSO called QUANTITY ] – this is called CORPORATE DISCOUNT RATE – for example? – well for example from Monday through Thursday or Friday I used to Live in Hotels, – mostly Marriott, in USA – and used to use HERTZ rental car – and we yes had AMEX – called american express corporate travel whom i used to call to book – hotel and car and taxi etc – there are many hotels in USA and yes in Israel and India also – and at least 2 rental car companies -in USA ]

so, usually a company does this – IF YOU DONT GIVE ME A 30 % DISCOUNT ON THE STANDARD RATE – MR HERTZ – then I would make AVIS the rental car compnay of choice for my travelling EMPLOYEES – meaning those in : Sales, and/or consulting road warriors

same with Hotels – as in ” YO – ME IS KPMG – CONSULTING – WE HAVE 50,000 CONSULTANTS STAYING IN HOTELS – EVERY WEEK, 52 WEEKS A YEAR MINUS CHRISTMAS. IF YOU DONT GIVE ME CORPORATE RATE – READ DISCOUNT – then – I WOULD CHOOSE SHERATON INSTEAD OF YOUR NICE BUT PRICEY HOTEL.

so, ?

well, so – we can have – an AI company in T & E segment – called Business Travel and Entertainment segment that makes this EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT – curently done manually a thing of the past, freeing employees from the mundane, repetitive, boring and tiring tasks.

HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT THAN OTHERS ?

HERE

MOST DO JUST AUTOMATION

we can do

ALL THE 4 A s

[1] AUTOMATE

[2] AUDIT

[3] ANALYZE

[4] ADVISE

.

Isnt it all about THE RAT RACE : READ – ANALYZE – TYPE ?

Around the end of each year major dictionaries declare their “word of the year.” Last year, for instance, the most looked-up word at Merriam-Webster.com was “justice.” Well, even though it’s early, I’m ready to declare the word of the year for 2019.

The word is “deep.”

Why? Because recent advances in the speed and scope of digitization, connectivity, big data and artificial intelligence are now taking us “deep” into places and into powers that we’ve never experienced before — and that governments have never had to regulate before. I’m talking about deep learning, deep insights, deep surveillance, deep facial recognition, deep voice recognition, deep automation and deep artificial minds.

Some of these technologies offer unprecedented promise and some unprecedented peril — but they’re all now part of our lives. Everything is going deep.

Which is why it may not be an accident that one of the biggest hit songs today is “Shallow,” from the movie “A Star Is Born.” The main refrain, sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, is: “I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in. … We’re far from the shallow now.”

We sure are. But the lifeguard is still on the beach and — here’s what’s really scary — he doesn’t know how to swim! More about that later. For now, how did we get so deep down where the sharks live?

The short answer: Technology moves up in steps, and each step, each new platform, is usually biased toward a new set of capabilities. Around the year 2000 we took a huge step up that was biased toward connectivity, because of the explosion of fiber-optic cable, wireless and satellites.

Suddenly connectivity became so fast, cheap, easy for you and ubiquitous that it felt like you could touch someone whom you could never touch before and that you could be touched by someone who could never touch you before.

Around 2007, we took another big step up. The iPhone, sensors, digitization, big data, the internet of things, artificial intelligence and cloud computing melded together and created a new platform that was biased toward abstracting complexity at a speed, scope and scale we’d never experienced before.

So many complex things became simplified. Complexity became so fast, free, easy to use and invisible that soon with one touch on Uber’s app you could page a taxi, direct a taxi, pay a taxi, rate a taxi driver and be rated by a taxi driver.

Over the last decade, these advances in the speed of connectivity and the elimination of complexity have grown exponentially. Because as big data got really big, as broadband got really fast, as algorithms got really smart, as 5G got actually deployed, artificial intelligence got really intelligent. So now, with no touch — but just a voice command or machines acting autonomously — we can go so much deeper in so many areas.

Scientists and doctors can now find the needle in the haystack of health data as the norm, not the exception, and therefore see certain disease patterns that were never apparent before. Machines can recognize your face so accurately that the Chinese government can punish you for jaywalking in Beijing, using street cameras, and you will never encounter a police officer.

Indeed, with today’s facial recognition technology, I can dispense with the card reader at my office’s security gate and instead use each employee’s face as an ID. And cars can drive on their own.

DeepMind, the artificial intelligence arm of Google’s parent, developed an A.I. program, AlphaGo, that has now defeated the world’s top human players of the ancient strategy game Go — which is much more complex than chess — by learning from human play.

As The Times reported, DeepMind “showed yet another way that computers could be developed to perform better than humans in highly complex tasks” and to “mimic the way the brain functions.” DeepMind’s next breakthrough, AlphaZero, did not even need to learn from humans. It learned even faster by repeatedly playing against itself!

Today “virtual agents” — using conversational interfaces powered by artificial intelligence — can increasingly understand your intent when you call the bank, credit card company or insurance company for service, just by hearing your voice.

It means machines can answer so many more questions than nonmachines, also known as “humans.” The percentage of calls a chatbot, or virtual agent, is able to handle without turning the caller over to a person is called its “containment rate,” and these rates are steadily soaring. Soon, automated systems will be so humanlike that they will have to self-identify as machines.

Automation is also going deep, fast. The Times’s Kevin Roose quoted Mohit Joshi, the president of Infosys, a technology firm that helps other businesses automate their operations, as saying in Davos last week: “People are looking to achieve very big numbers. Earlier they had incremental, 5 to 10 percent goals in reducing their work force. Now they’re saying, ‘Why can’t we do it with 1 percent of the people we have?’”

But bad guys, who are always early adopters, also see the same potential to go deep in wholly new ways.

They can fake your face and voice so well that they can create a YouTube video that will go viral of you saying racists things or make it look like the president of the United States just announced a nuclear attack on Russia. They can use technology to fake a bank manager’s voice so well that it can call your grandmother, and, with a voice command, ask her to transfer $10,000 to an account in Switzerland and she’ll do it — and you’ll never catch them in time.

That’s why the adjective that so many people are affixing to all of these new capabilities to convey their awesome power is “deep.”

On Jan. 20, The London Observer looked at Harvard Business School professor Shoshana Zuboff’s new book, the title of which perfectly describes the deep dark waters we’ve entered: “The Age of Surveillance Capital.”

“Surveillance capitalism,” Zuboff wrote, “unilaterally claims human experience as free raw material for translation into behavioral data. Although some of these data are applied to service improvement, the rest are declared as a proprietary behavioral surplus, fed into advanced manufacturing processes known as ‘machine intelligence,’ and fabricated into prediction products that anticipate what you will do now, soon and later. Finally, these prediction products are traded in a new kind of marketplace that I call behavioral futures markets. Surveillance capitalists have grown immensely wealthy from these trading operations, for many companies are willing to lay bets on our future behavior.”

Unfortunately, we have not developed the regulations or governance, or scaled the ethics, to manage a world of such deep powers, deep interactions and deep potential abuses.

Two quotes tell that story: Last April, Senator Orrin Hatch was questioning Facebook C.E.O. Mark Zuckerberg during a joint hearing of the commerce and judiciary committees. At one point Hatch asked Zuckerberg, “So, how do you sustain a business model in which users don’t pay for your service?”

Zuckerberg, clearly trying to stifle a laugh, replied, “Senator, we run ads.” Hatch did not seem to understand that Facebook’s business model is to mine users’ data and then run targeted ads — and Hatch was one of Facebook’s regulators.

But then Zuckerberg was also clueless about how deep the powers of the Facebook platform had gone — deep enough that a few smart Russian hackers could manipulate it to help Donald Trump win the presidency.

When faced with evidence that fake news spread on Facebook influenced the outcome of the 2016 election, Zuckerberg dismissed that notion as a “pretty crazy idea.” It turns out that it was happening at an industrial scale and he later had to apologize.

Regulations often lag behind new technologies, but when they move this fast and cut this deep, that lag can be really dangerous. I wish I thought that catch-up was around the corner. I don’t. Our national discussion has never been more shallow — reduced to 280 characters.

This has created an opening and burgeoning demand for political, social and religious leaders, government institutions and businesses that can go deep — that can validate what is real and offer the public deep truths, deep privacy protections and deep trust.

But deep trust and deep loyalty cannot be forged overnight. They take time. That’s one reason this old newspaper I work for — the Gray Lady — is doing so well today. Not all, but many people, are desperate for trusted navigators.

Many will also look for that attribute in our next president, because they sense that deep changes are afoot. It is unsettling, and yet, there’s no swimming back. We are, indeed, far from the shallow now.

Thanks in Advance,
Sincerely
Ajay

I’ll keep this brief: within a few hours of Kamala kicking off her campaign for president on Sunday, the national GOP launched a nasty, false attack against our campaign. This is just the first of many attacks, and it proves what we already know: they’re scared of Kamala and the movement we’re building.

We need to fight back ASAP. Every donation towards our $500,000 end-of-month fundraising goal will help get Kamala’s positive message out in these critical first weeks after our launch. Can you pitch in a donation today to help us get there?

Kamala’s rejecting corporate PAC donations into her campaign. That means every contribution — no matter what amount — matters. Whether or not we reach our first end-of-month fundraising goal will impact strategic decisions like:

  • Where — and how much — can we afford to hire staff in key states with early primaries?
  • How many organizers can we hire and volunteers can we empower with new tools?
  • Can we afford to design, print, and distribute campaign literature and merchandise?
  • How much budget do we have to invest in digital and TV ads to introduce Kamala to millions of voters?

If we’re going to run our campaign the right way, it’s going to take significant resources. But we wouldn’t set our goals so high if we didn’t think we could reach them.

Our campaign is being built FOR the people, BY the people — which means refusing corporate PAC money and relying on a real grassroots movement to sustain our campaign.

Will you step up today with an investment of $10 or more to Kamala’s campaign for president? Your donation will help us reach our first end-of-month fundraising goal and invest in critical resources to grow our movement.

Thanks for being with us.

Donate to Democrats before Thursday’s deadline if you’re committed to winning Democratic victories up and down the ticket, in every state, city, and ZIP code.

I’ve worked in politics since the early ’80s, Ajay, and never have I witnessed more unchecked chaos in our government than I have under Donald Trump and his Republican enablers.

Don’t get me wrong — Trump has been a complete disaster for our country. But what has made his tenure all the more damaging is the fact that he’s got so many GOP allies in Congress and in state legislatures nationwide. We made major gains by winning back the House in 2018, but our work is far from over. The only way you and I can finally stop Republicans’ reckless agenda is by working tirelessly to elect Democrats up and down the ticket, in every state, city, and ZIP code.

The DNC is the only party organization committed to fighting for Democrats at every level and in every corner of our country, and that work simply can’t happen without the support of grassroots supporters like you. Before Thursday’s critical fundraising deadline, I have to ask:

Can you donate $10 before Thursday at midnight to support Democrats in all 50 states? Your support today will determine how prepared the DNC is to defeat Trump and Republicans in 2019, 2020, and beyond.

If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.

EXPRESS DONATE: $10
EXPRESS DONATE: $25

Or donate another amount.

When I chaired the DNC, our party introduced what was, back then, a revolutionary idea: The 50-state strategy. By recruiting Democratic candidates to run for office in every state regardless how "red," and then funding state parties to support those candidates, the Democratic Party completely changed how we approached winning elections and building the long-term strength of our party.

The 50-state strategy worked wonders for our party, Ajay, and today it’s more important than ever that we reinvest in this winning model. Creating lasting progress can’t happen unless we commit to electing Democrats at every level from the school board to the Oval Office, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting the DNC’s work doing exactly that.

Chip in $10 before Thursday’s end-of-month deadline if you’re committed to electing Democrats up and down the ballot, in all 50 states. Our party is relying on grassroots supporters like you to help get this done.

Thanks for being part of this,

Howard

Yesterday, in front of more than 20,000 people in my hometown of Oakland, we officially kicked off this campaign for president.

It was just a couple blocks from yesterday’s rally that, nearly 30 years ago, as a young district attorney, I walked into the courtroom for the very first time and said five words that would guide my life’s work:

“Kamala Harris, for The People.”

For The People isn’t just our campaign slogan: it’s the heart and soul of our movement, the very reason I wake up every morning ready to fight so hard to win this race. I promise to stand up and fight for YOU.

If you’re with me in this, one of the most important ways you can show your support is by making an early contribution to our campaign. Help us end January strong and show the world what this grassroots team is capable of.

Will you pitch in a contribution of $10 to our campaign? We need to raise $500,000 online before midnight on Thursday, January 31 to stay on track.

We’ve taken on many battles together. We’ve won and we’ve lost. But we’ve never stopped fighting — there’s too much on the line. We are at an inflection point in the history of our nation. The American Dream and our American democracy are under attack like never before.

We are called to answer a fundamental question: who are we as Americans? It’s up to us to answer that question — to the world, and to each other. We know we are better than this.

We’re going to need to fight to make it true. Together, we will fight to guarantee that working and middle-class families get a hand up with the largest working and middle-class tax cut in decades. Together, we will fight to declare education a fundamental right, and to guarantee that right with universal pre-k and debt-free college.

We will fight to ensure health care a fundamental human right, and ensure that right with Medicare for All. We will fight to protect our democracy and our institutions against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We will fight for an America where every single parent can send their children to school without fear of a mass killing spree. We will fight for an America where we treat attacks on voting rights, civil rights, women’s rights, and immigrant rights as attacks on our country itself.

Together, we will stand up and fight for every single person who has ever felt vulnerable or voiceless — because it is our duty to one another as Americans to protect one another and lift each other up.

I’ll be blunt: we will only win this race if we’re powered by a true grassroots movement. That means we need to reach every single fundraising goal we set. Right now, we’re up against the first end-of-month goal of our campaign for president: raising $500,000 online before midnight on January 31.

If you can afford to, please pitch in your first contribution to our campaign For The People today.

Missing Toddler Found Alive Says He Was ‘With A Bear For Two Days’

Searchers found Casey Hathaway on Thursday, two days after he vanished from his grandmother’s yard in North Carolina.

5c4e149320000001016bbdec.jpeg?cache=roBnTRgjai&ops=crop_4_3_516_344,scalefit_630_noupscaleCRAVEN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

A 3-year-old boy who was found alive after having been missing for days told family members that he was busy spending time with a bear.

Casey Hathaway was playing with other children on Tuesday when he vanished from his grandmother’s yard in a rural part of eastern North Carolina. He was found alive two days later from where he disappeared after community search crews received a tip.

Casey’s aunt, Breanna Hathaway, posted Friday on Facebook that her nephew was home, healthy and smiling ― and had quite the tale to relate about his experience.

“He said he hung out with a bear for two days,” Hathaway said.

She was willing to roll with the story, saying, “God sent him a friend to keep him safe. … Miracles do happen.”

In another post, Hathaway said Casey likes to watch “Masha and the Bear,” a show about a girl who lives in the woods with a paternal bear who keeps her safe.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said at a news conference Thursday that search crews found Casey wet, cold and tangled in vines, but not seriously injured.

He was “a little lethargic, but warm,” when he was found, Hughes told WCTI-TVin an interview. The sheriff said Casey “wanted water and his mom” when he was found.

The boy “didn’t really get into… how he was able to survive,” though he did mention “having a friend in the woods who was a bear,” the sheriff added, without commenting further on that scenario.

There were no signs of abduction, Hughes said.

“He’s up and talking,” Casey’s mother, Brittany Hathaway, said at the news conference after thanking search crews. “He’s already asked to watch Netflix, so he’s good, he’s good.”

The family is planning to set up a post office box to handle the huge wave of support, including from people who Hathaway said want to send stuffed teddy bears.

Breanna Hathaway posted on Facebook that the family appreciates the bear gifts, while advising those sending them to “remember that he can only [take] home so many.”

You already know how proud I am of my amazing wife, Kamala, but today, “proud” is an understatement. This afternoon, with more than 20,000 supporters in her hometown of Oakland, Kamala officially kicked off our campaign for president. She fired up the crowd with her vision for a campaign OF the people and FOR the people.

Earlier in the week, I sent you some behind-the-scenes photos from “Day 1” — the day Kamala announced she’s running. So many supporters wrote nice notes back, so I wanted to send you some more photos from today’s HUGE campaign kick-off rally. Check them out:

Today was incredible, and not just because of Kamala (though, as her husband, I’m extremely biased). Today was incredible because of the people — each and every person who took time out of their Sunday, in person or online, to participate in this historic moment.

I’m grateful for all of you who joined us today and excited to meet those of you we’ll see along the long road to 2020.

We’re in it to win it.

All my best,

OAKLAND, California (AP) — US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Sunday that those in power are trying to turn people against each other, which she says is “not our America.”

Harris, a first-term US senator who announced her candidacy last Monday, rallied supporters outside City Hall in Oakland, her hometown and where she served as a prosecutor before becoming the state attorney general. The event was the formal kickoff for her campaign.

“We are here because the American Dream and our American democracy are under attack and on the line like never before,” she said. “And we are here at this moment in time because we must answer a fundamental question: Who are we? Who are we as Americans? So, let’s answer that question to the world and each other right here and right now. America, we are better than this.”

Harris also said that racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, homophobia and transphobia are real in the US “They are age-old forms of hate with new fuel. And we need to speak that truth so we can deal with it,” she said.

Harris cast herself as the kind of leader who can unify the country and would fight for the needs of all Americans.

“I’m running for president because I love my country. I’m running to be a president by the people. Of the people. For all the people,” she said and echoed the words she has used in courtrooms and has adopted as her campaign’s slogan: “My whole life, I’ve only had one client: The people.”

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris, of California, acknowledges the crowd as she formally launches her presidential campaign at a rally in her hometown of Oakland, Calif., Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019. (AP Photo/Tony Avelar)

The daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, Harris entered the race on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Campaign aides say she has drawn inspiration from Shirley Chisholm, who in 1972 became the first black woman to run for president from a major party.

If Harris were to win the White House, she would be the first African-American woman and first person of Asian descent to be president.

Her first news conference as a candidate was on the campus of Howard University, the historically black college in the nation’s capital that she attended as an undergraduate. On Friday, she was in South Carolina to speak to members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, of which she is a member.

Harris’ campaign is expected to highlight her career as a prosecutor as part of her rationale for seeking the presidency. Harris was the first black woman elected district attorney in California, as well as the first woman, first African-American and first Asian-American to hold that job. Some of her tenure as attorney general, particularly relating to criminal justice, has come under early scrutiny.

Harris is among the first major Democrats to jump into what is expected to be a crowded 2020 presidential contest.

10.9K people are talking about this

Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have announced exploratory committees. Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney and Julian Castro, federal housing chief under President Barack Obama and a former San Antonio mayor, already are in the race.

Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Bernie Sanders of Vermont may also run.

In her Oakland speech, Harris said she sees this year as an “inflection point” in American history and that she is best positioned to unite a divided country.

“Even though we have powerful forces trying to sow hate and division, the truth is that, as Americans, we have much more in common than what separates us,” according to her prepared remarks.

After the rally, Harris planned to her first trip to Iowa as a presidential candidate. In the weeks before last November’s elections, Harris traveled to the leadoff caucus state to campaign on behalf of Democrats, and also visited other early-voting states.

Harris’s campaign will be based in Baltimore and led by Juan Rodriguez who managed her 2016 Senate campaign. Aides say the campaign will have a second office in Oakland.

Trump’s entire presidency has been such shibai, I can hardly stand it.

First, Trump decided that he was going to hold hundreds of thousands of federal workers and contractors hostage over his wall. Now, he is threatening to declare a national emergency if he doesn’t get money for his wall in just a few weeks. This isn’t leadership — this is a tantrum. Enough is enough!

If you’re as committed as I am to restoring sanity and dignity to our government, then I need you to join me in working harder than ever to elect a Democratic president and win more seats nationwide in 2020. Reaching this end-of-month fundraising goal is critical for the Democratic Party, which is why I’m asking:

Will you make a $10 contribution before Thursday’s deadline to help elect Democrats from the school board to the Oval Office? Your donation today will help our party hit our January goal, and you’ll receive an Official 2019 DNC Membership Card.

DONATE: $10
DONATE: $25
DONATE: $50
DONATE: $100
DONATE: $200
Or donate another amount.

Trump’s petulant government shutdown was far from the only damage that he and his Republican allies have caused to our country over the past two years. From undermining access to health care to separating children from their parents at our southern border to dismantling critical environmental protections, the GOP has consistently failed the American families they swore to serve.

You and I have the power to elect more progressive leaders in the months and years ahead, but we cannot wait until 2020 to start the critical work it will take to win back our country for working people. Electing a Democrat to the White House in 2020 and winning seats nationwide depends on the strength of the Democratic Party’s infrastructure, and making a donation to the DNC before Thursday’s midnight deadline will help put Democrats in the strongest possible position to defeat Trump and the GOP.

Contribute $10 before Thursday’s end-of-month deadline if you’re committed to electing Democrats up and down the ballot who will fight for our Democratic values. Any amount you can contribute will make a difference — and with your donation today you’ll become an official, card-carrying Democrat.

Thank you for standing with Democrats,

Mazie

Before I officially kick off our campaign for president —

From: Kamala Harris <info>

Subject: Before I officially kick off our campaign for president —
To: <ajayinsead03>

In just a few moments, I’m heading to the rally in my hometown of Oakland to formally kick off our campaign for president. I wanted to share some themes from the speech I’ll deliver today.

But first, let me take this moment to share a genuine message of thanks. I’m grateful to have you by my side as we take on this historic challenge. None of this could be possible without you and the tens of thousands of other people across the country who are stepping up to join me in this fight.

I’m so proud to be a daughter of Oakland. My parents met as graduate students at UC Berkeley, where they were active in the civil rights movement.

They were born half a world apart from each other. My father, Donald, came from Jamaica to study economics. My mother, Shyamala, came from India to study the science of fighting disease. My parents came here in pursuit of more than just knowledge. Like so many others, they came in pursuit of a dream — for themselves, for me, and for my sister Maya.

We were raised by a community with a deep belief in the promise of our country — and a deep understanding of the parts of that promise that still remain unfulfilled. We were taught to see a world beyond just ourselves. To be conscious and compassionate about the struggles of ALL people. We were raised to believe public service is noble and the fight for justice is everyone’s responsibility. That, in many ways, formed my life.

That’s why I’m running for president: I love our country, and I feel a deep sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are and what our country can be.

I’m ready to fight for the values we as Americans hold sacred and dear. And I’m ready to fight because we deserve leadership that will focus on the needs of the people of this country, not their own self-interests. Together, we will put forth a vision of the future of our country in which everyone can see themselves. And I believe ours is a winning fight.

This won’t be easy — but nothing worth fighting for ever is. We face tough days and hard work ahead. But this is our America — and it’s up to each and every one of us to fight for our future.

The people in power are no match for the power of The People.

Let’s do this.

— Kamala Harris

President Trump’s defeat in his border-wall standoff with Congress has clouded his already perilous path to a second term in 2020, undercutting Mr. Trump’s cherished image as a forceful leader and deft negotiator, and emboldening alike his Democratic challengers and Republican dissenters who hope to block his re-election.

The longest government shutdown in history inflicted severe political damage on the president, dragging down his poll numbers even among Republicans and stirring concern among party leaders about his ability to navigate the next two years of divided government. Mr. Trump, close associates acknowledge, appears without a plan for mounting a strong campaign in 2020, or for persuading the majority of Americans who view him negatively to give him another chance.

Compounding the harm to Mr. Trump on Friday was the indictment of Roger Stone, his political adviser for several decades, on charges of lying to investigators and obstructing the inquiry by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The indictment was taken by some Republicans as the surest sign yet that Mr. Mueller’s investigation is likely to grow more painful to Mr. Trump and his associates before it wraps up.

Mr. Trump still commands the loyalty of a passionate electoral base that has rallied to him in trying moments, and advisers believe he will have room to right himself while Democratic presidential candidates are mired in a long nomination fight. Yet they are also growing anxious that he could face a draining primary of his own next year.

Several prominent Trump antagonists are actively urging other Republicans to take on the president, and a popular governor, Larry Hogan of Maryland, has indicated he is newly open to their entreaties.

In a sign of the White House’s determination to project party unity, a top Trump campaign official, Bill Stepien, traveled to the Republican National Committee meeting in New Mexico this week to orchestrate an ornamental resolution of support for the president. It passed unanimously on Friday afternoon, hailing Mr. Trump for his “effective presidency” even as his shutdown strategy collapsed.

David Winston, a Republican pollster, said the burden was now on Mr. Trump to restore his stature as a leader by forging some kind of border-security deal with Democrats, and to deliver a stronger message on the economy.

“Leadership means results,” Mr. Winston said. “When you have a shutdown, people look at it, basically, as: the political system has failed.”

Mr. Winston said polling data suggested the border wall had been a problematic fight to pick. “Immigration is an important issue,’’ he said, “but people are waking up every day trying to figure out how they’re going to pay a set of bills in front of them.”

For now, Mr. Trump remains wholly focused on appeasing his conservative base, comprising perhaps a third of the electorate, despite private G.O.P. polling suggesting that his agenda on immigration has failed to move the country in his favor, Republicans who work closely with the president said.

But Mr. Trump emerged from the shutdown with nothing to show for it, having angered swing voters with his intransigence, while disappointing hard-line supporters by failing to secure any funding for a border wall.

[Read about President Trump’s retreat on the shutdown.]

Conservatives still believe that Mr. Trump cannot afford to abandon his crusade for a barrier. Not long before Mr. Trump agreed to reopen the government, Representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina, a White House ally who leads the hard-line Freedom Caucus, argued that the wall fight was vital to the president’s re-election hopes.

“It’s not lost on any of us that a central component of what he said when he ran in 2016 has to be addressed in a meaningful way,” he said in a recent interview.

Privately, some of Mr. Trump’s 2016 aides have said they are pessimistic about his path to 270 electoral votes after his party’s midterm defeats in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. An Associated Press poll on Wednesday showed that Mr. Trump’s overall approval rating had fallen to 34 percent, with his support among Republicans dipping below 80 percent — a startling turn for a president who strives for total control of the G.O.P., and has usually achieved it.

The Mueller investigation looms as another destabilizing force for the president. David Kochel, a Republican strategist based in Iowa who is opposed to Mr. Trump, said the special counsel’s eventual report could determine whether Mr. Trump is vulnerable in a primary.

“That will be a focusing mechanism for the party,” Mr. Kochel said.

While core Republican voters remain loyal to him and he is not currently facing a contest for the nomination, Mr. Trump’s low standing with political moderates and especially women is leading some G.O.P. officeholders to voice unease about having him at the top of the ticket next year.

“I think it’s healthy and appropriate for the party to consider in 2020 whether this is really the path it wants to continue taking,” said David F. Holt, the Republican mayor of Oklahoma City, where a Democrat won a stunning House upset last year thanks in part to the suburban antipathy toward Mr. Trump.

The 2020 election is nearly two years away and Mr. Trump has ample time to build a political operation, marshal support from financial backers and make his case to the American people. Mr. Trump captured the presidency with a largely improvisational candidacy, guided by his own instincts for personal combat and cultural division, and lacking the strategic discipline of most presidential campaigns.

But even among his own political lieutenants, there is a general recognition that Mr. Trump currently lacks anything resembling a positive message.

Mr. Trump is especially fixated on two well-known Democrats, speaking frequently about Joseph R. Biden Jr., the former vice president whom Mr. Trump regards as his most dangerous potential opponent, and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Some of his advisers are more preoccupied with two other would-be challengers, who would offer a starker generational contrast with the 72-year-old president: Senator Kamala Harris of California and Beto O’Rourke, the former Texas Senate candidate.

In this volatile moment, however, Mr. Trump and his aides have been just as focused on heading off competition from fellow Republicans. In addition to helping direct a resolution of support from the R.N.C. — Mr. Trump tweeted approvingly Saturday morning, suggesting re-election “should be easy’’ — Mr. Stepien, the former White House political director, has been leading an effort to ensure there is no insurrection at next year’s convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Now a top aide on Mr. Trump’s campaign, Mr. Stepien and his deputies have been consulting party leaders about shutting off avenues to a challenge and ensuring that states cannot put forward “favorite son” candidates to contest the president’s renomination.

Mr. Trump has also dedicated a team of aides to guaranteeing that only political loyalists are elected to serve as delegates to the convention. To that end, Mr. Stepien dispatched some of his staff members this month to see that their preferred candidate remained in charge of the Maine Republican Party.

The fruit of some of those efforts were on display at the R.N.C. meeting outside Albuquerque, where enthusiasm for Mr. Trump was undimmed, at least publicly. The party leaders ignored Mr. Stone’s arrest, which took place just hours before they gathered, and Ronna McDaniel, the party chair, did not deviate from her prepared remarks, lashing the media for promoting “manufactured scandals.”

Jeff Kent, the party committeeman from Washington State, offered perhaps the most ferocious tribute to the president, brandishing his red “Make America Great Again” hat as he addressed officials.

“To the press in the back of the room,” said Mr. Kent, his voice rising, “please go tell the world we will always proudly wear this hat and we will always proudly support our great president, Donald A. Trump.” (The president’s middle initial is “J.”)

Other Republicans view Mr. Trump’s political stumbles as an opportunity to lure a challenger into the race, with Mr. Hogan emerging as a new subject of their efforts. At a December conference hosted by the Niskanen Center, a right-of-center think tank, Mr. Hogan spoke briefly with William Kristol, an implacable Trump critic in the conservative press, who argued that the president is weaker than widely understood, people briefed on the conversation said.

Mr. Hogan, 62, is set to meet more formally in the coming weeks with Mr. Kristol and Sarah Longwell, a Republican strategist helping marshal opposition to Mr. Trump. Mr. Kristol and Ms. Longwell have been meeting with Republican donors and potential challengers, sharing focus-group and polling data about the president’s vulnerability with what they call “Reluctant Trump Voters,” according to a copy of their presentation reviewed by The New York Times.

Mr. Hogan is planning a trip to Iowa in his capacity as an officer of the National Governors Association. But his advisers also recently reached out to Mr. Kochel, the Iowa-based strategist, to ask that he put together a dinner with similarly minded Republicans while Mr. Hogan is there, according to an associate of Mr. Kochel briefed on the exchange.

Jerry Taylor, president of the Niskanen Center, said Mr. Hogan had “made it clear that the door is open to a potential candidacy, but no decision has been made.”

In addition to Mr. Hogan, William F. Weld, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, is weighing a challenge to Mr. Trump as a small-government moderate, people who have spoken with him said. Mr. Weld, 73, who was the Libertarian Party’s vice-presidential nominee in 2016, has discussed either opposing Mr. Trump in the Republican primaries or seeking the Libertarian presidential nomination.

Mr. Weld declined to comment on his deliberations, and Mr. Hogan declined through an aide to be interviewed.

Other Republicans known to be entertaining campaigns against Mr. Trump include John R. Kasich, the former governor of Ohio, who ran in 2016; Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska; and Jeff Flake, the former senator from Arizona. But Mr. Sasse is said to have grown uneasy about the idea, and Mr. Kasich and Mr. Flake are pursuing opportunities in television.

Bruce Berke, a Republican strategist in New Hampshire aligned with Mr. Kasich, said he currently saw Mr. Trump as unassailable in a G.O.P. primary.

“A primary challenge in 2020, as of today, would be futile for anyone,” Mr. Berke said.

Still, Republican donors will want to know just how damaged the president may be by the end of this year before they truly commit to a challenge.

Asked if he would be willing to raise money for a primary opponent to Mr. Trump, Stanley Druckenmiller, a New York-based investor who has given millions to Republican candidates, said, “If I thought such a candidate would be a good president and had a realistic chance of securing the nomination, yes, of course.”

The candidacy of Harris, whose mother was Indian and father Jamaican, may have stirred underlyin g generational, and ideological fissures not just among mainstream Democratic Party voters, but also within the Indian-A merican community and possibly within other minority ethnic groups. Where millennial Democrats may diverge along less or more Left-leaning candidates in the field, those in the somewhat older group in their 40s, including Obama supporters, could end up pitching for candidates like former Vice President Joe Biden if he joins the crowd, or even Texas Congressm an Julian Castro, or first-to-declare Sen.

United States Senator Kamala Harris’ run for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2020 presidential race, could split the Indian-American party faithfuls during the run-up to the nomination.

The candidacy of Harris, whose mother was Indian and father Jamaican, may have stirred underlying generational, and ideological fissures not just among mainstream Democratic Party voters, but also within the Indian-American community and possibly within other minority ethnic groups.

Where millennial Democrats may diverge along less or more Left-leaning candidates in the field, those in the somewhat older group in their 40s, including Obama supporters, could end up pitching for candidates like former Vice President Joe Biden if he joins the crowd, or even Texas Congressman Julian Castro, or first-to-declare Sen. Elizabeth Warren. And then there may be those who feel Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu-American to run for office and swear on the Bhagwat Gita, deserves their support. Other’s have been impressed by Beto O’Rourke of Texas, and yet others feel Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio has been a long-time “India Friend.”

“There may be 22-35 candidates vying for the Democratic nomination ultimately, and we Indian-Americans are not a monolithic community,” concedes Shekar Narasimhan, founder and chair of the bipartisan Super-PAC, AAPI Victory Fund, and former Democratic National Committee member. “But here’s the thing – for once in our lifetime, we have a viable candidate (for President).” He dismisses, the candidacy of former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who he notes did not get more than 1 percent of the Republican vote when he ran for his party’s nomination. Harris on the other hand, is No. 5 on the list of Democratic contenders, Narasimhan says.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, described Harris as a “very impressive candidate,” but skirted around the issue of endorsing any Democrat for office. Not only was it too early, but he had at least 6 colleagues in the House planning a run for the party nomination. “But it’s really good to have a diverse range of people, and diverse range of views, so that voters in our party have a chance to choose the very best candidate against Donald Trump,” he says non-committal about his preference at this early stage.

“In my case it’s very important that the candidate set forth their vision for the country for 2024 and 2028 and beyond – and it is a vision for growing the middle class and being inclusive, not just on the Democratic side but also the Republican,” Krishnamoorthi told News India Times. With the number of candidates that will be in the fray, he said, Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez told him the debates may be split into two stages. Harris, “Being of Indian descent, she is obviously a candidate a lot of Indian-Americans would be wanting to learn about,” Krishnamoorthi said.

“It’s wonderful that she (Harris) has joined and Tulsi has joined. Each person brings differences in terms of the norms – which is the history of this country – first Protestants, then a Catholic (John F. Kennedy), then the first divorcee (Ronald Reagan). So the more people run, each barrier gets clipped away,” said Anju Bhargava, founder of Hindu American Seva Communities.

“Kamala is already facing the ‘birther’ issue,” where like President Barack Obama, her American-ness is being questioned, Bhargava said, and Gabbard is being identified as having right-wing Hindu connections. “Kamala represents the future for the 2nd generation of Indian-Americans – an American-born, fully acclimated to the mainstream environment; whose mother tried to impart some Indian culture,” Bhargava says.

If Republican Nikki Haley enters the fray on the other side of the aisle, “We can take pride that we are not a marginalized, that we are part of the mainstream and that we vote on the record of that person and what they are going to do on issues you value,” Bhargava said. “I would support anyone I thought was aligned to my interest, my values, rather than just on ethnicity. But it makes me very proud that people of my ethnicity are there to diffuse the differences.”

Even if Harris does not fare well in the earliest primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, she would do well in South Carolina with its heavy African American voter population, observers contend. Then she goes on to Nevada, where according to Narasimhan, Latinos and Asian Americans make up 40 percent of the populations with Asian Americans alone making up 12 percent; After that its Super Tuesday at the end of March – California, Virginia, and North Carolina, where Narasimhan says he sees Harris winning a good standing in California.

“If she survives into March end, she could be the nominee,” Narasimhan maintains. “The bottom line is she is viable and at least positioned to win. And we (Indian-Americans) like winners.”

“I’ve been talking to alums of the Washington Leadership Program and they have been excited about her for a long time,” Harin Contractor of WLP, said of the young people who have attended this internship in Washington, D.C. “They admire her life of service, stories of her growing up, and the influence of her Indian mother, especially the women in our program are very attracted to her candidacy,” Contractor told News India Times.

But there’s another dimension to Kamala, says Amit Jani, founder of NJLead, an organization that helps prepare South Asians for political office. “A lot of people in the community may point to her not identifying as Indian. the fact that she was brought up by her Jamaican grandmother, and is more close to her Jamaican ties,” Jani observed. “At least one out of five Indian-Americans I have spoken to, mention how she hasn’t talked about her Indian heritage,” Jani says.

Harris for her part, has been following the playbook, another political activist said. Complaints that she had not acknowledged her Indian heritage enough, have been somewhat corrected over the last year or so, with some of her statements about her Indian mother’s strong influence, her childhood visit to India, etc. And she initiated her effort to become visible by being the Chief Guest at the high-profile non-profit Pratham USA event late last year. Now, she needs to build on that, say activists of all ages.

“Now Tulsi (Gabbard) talks openly about Hinduism. It will be interesting to see if Kamala will start talking about the Indian side of her background,” Jani, formerly in the South Asians for Hillary group, which now calls itself South Asians for America.

Jani believes Indian-Americans are now a political block to cultivate. “It will be interesting to see how she will approach the Indian community. If I was her consultant, I would encourage her to. Indian-Americans matter a lot – they are the fastest-growing ethnic group; have high socioeconomic status, are at federal and local levels, and a lot of politicians recognize that now they are more active, have more organizations, and more activists,” Jani asserts.

“She has work to do,” Narasimhan concedes about Kamala’s courting or lack thereof, of Indian-Americans. “For a considerable time she did not speak about her Indian heritage, which she began changing over the last year; Now she is appealing to the niches – Indians, Jamaicans, Asians, and in between, she’s written a book, raised the money….,” he notes. The Wall Street Journal reported Harris had raised $1.5 million within 24 hours of announcing her run.

“Now that the (Indian-American) community is acknowledging your heritage — you have to show up,” contends Narasimhan. “She’s got to show up,” he reiterates.

One of the first organizations to extend unqualified support to Harris, is the Indian American Impact Fund which declared its unqualified support for her, calling the announcement, “groundbreaking.”

“As the first viable Indian American candidate for President of the United States, she is a trailblazer for our community and a champion for our values. We applaud her decision and look forward to supporting her enthusiastically in the days and months ahead,” the Impact Fund said in a statement. This PAC is headed by New Jersey businessman Deepak Raj, who also heads Pratham USA.
